You Have Options

Naturally, if financially possible, Buy before you Sell. It is the easiest way to control the closing date and gives you time to sell your current home for top dollar. If you are like me, most (90+%) aren’t able to do this because they need the proceeds from their current home. 

Sell before you Buy is another alternative, but you have to get creative to try and write the contracts such that it affords you time to now Buy something and close simultaneously. Not an easy task and sometimes it forces you to choose a new home to quickly.
